ALVAR AALTO SOCIETY

The Alvar Aalto Society is a registered association which was founded in Jyväskylä in 1966 to promote and realize a museum project bearing the name of Alvar Aalto. The museum building, finished in 1973, was designed by Alvar Aalto himself to provide facilities to house a museum of architecture and the art collections of the City of Jyväskylä. In 1979, the museum became part of the organization of the City of Jyväskylä. In 1998, the Alvar Aalto Museum was incorporated into the Alvar Aalto Foundation. In accordance with the wishes of Alvar Aalto, the museum did not become a one-man museum. Instead, the museum’s field of operations was expanded to include extensive contacts with other visual arts as well as architecture.

In cooperation with the Alvar Aalto Museum, the Alvar Aalto Society has, locally, nationally and internationally, sought to cherish Alvar Aalto’s architectural heritage and his visual art, and promote research into them by organizing exhibitions, lectures and discussions and by carrying out various publishing activities.
